School on "Modern theories of correlated electron systems"

May 11-29, 2009

Location

Les Houches is a resort village in the Chamonix valley in the French Alps. Established in 1951, the Physics School is located in a group of chalets surrounded by meadows and woods, at an altitude of 1150 m facing the Mont-Blanc range - a very favourable environment for intellectual activity in ideal surroundings for hiking, mountaineering and sight-seeing.

Weather is unpredictable; there can even be snow in May (altitude 1150 m). It is therefore recommended to bring warm sweater(s), rain gear, good walking shoes and home shoes.

Washing machines are available.

Note that mountaineering can be dangerous, in particular without the appropriate material, preparation, or under bad conditions. It is therefore advisable to bring suitable equipment and to consult the weather forecast (see this web page or here). In May it may be too early for alpine mountaineering tours. There are nevertheless places in and around Les Houches where sport climbing is possible. One of the participants, Christoph Groth, has volunteered to offer some advice to those who are interested in hiking or sports climbing in the area around Les Houches, also a few days before or after the school. Any such activity is at the participants' own risk; neither the organizers nor the Physics School will accept any responsability should an accident occur.

Consult the web pages of the Physics School for further pratical information.

Les Houches Physics School is affiliated with Université Joseph Fourier Grenoble I (UJF). It is a joint interuniversity facility of UJF and Grenoble-INP, and is supported by the UJF, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Direction des Sciences de la Matière du Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA/DSM).
