Career History

Detlev Buchholz was born in Danzig in 1944. He received the Diploma in Physics and the Ph.D. degree from the Universität Hamburg in 1967 and 1973, respectively. After temporary positions and fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, the Universität Hamburg, at CERN, Geneva, and the University of California, Berkeley, he became Professor at the Universität Hamburg in 1979. In 1997 he moved to the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and held a position there as Professor of Theoretical Physics until his retirement in 2009. His research is in mathematical physics, primarily in relativistic quantum field theory with emphasis on conceptual and constructive problems of particle physics and statistical mechanics. For his work in quantum field theory he received several honours, most recently the Max Planck Medal by the German Physical Society in 2008. He is presently Associate Editor of the journals Abstract and Applied Analysis, Annales Henri Poincaré and Reviews in Mathematical Physics.
